A genius idea from a college business class is now being implemented by a small college in the NYC suburbs, and it’s raising them thousands of dollars for scholarships.
Purchase College, which is located near Westchester County Airport, runs a 24 hour valet parking and shuttle service for travelers headed towards the airport–where parking spaces are few and far between.
The college’s service, Purchase Park 2 Fly, charges a $10 daily rate for online reservations. The airport? It charges $28.80.
The business plan for the Purchase Park 2 Fly service was created by students in a business class at the college. And the parking lot, which had over 1,000 rarely used parking spaces, needed to be used more efficiently.
In the future, Purchase College plans on expanding the program even further to include parking for gala events in the Performing Arts Center on campus, and it’s continuing to go green by offering charging stations for electric cars.
The program has been so successful that it’s served 12,600 cars this year–and it hasn’t even hit the big travel season yet. Last Thanksgiving, 584 cars used the Purchase Park 2 Fly service. The executive director of the Purchase College Association, Patrick Savolskis, says that the service clears over $80,000 a year!
And the best part? It all goes back to the students, through scholarships, capital improvements, and institutional grants.
